Welcome to the Pittsburgh Society of Artists Website!

The P I T T S B U R G H Society of Artists was founded in May 1965. With more than 300 members, whose work represents all visual-arts media. In 2015 PSA marked its 50th year dedicated to providing its members with opportunities to exhibit their art, both in the Pittsburgh area and beyond southwestern Pennsylvania.

In addition to providing exhibition opportunities, the Society since its inception has been dedicated to encouraging creative thinking about the arts through public dialogue. At our general membership meetings, held twice a year, the guild engages speakers to explore some aspect of the arts. The general public has always been invited to these stimulating programs.

Any individual eighteen years old or older who lives within 150 miles of Pittsburgh may apply for membership by submitting three original pieces of art to a screening by the Board of Directors. Screenings are held in the spring and fall of each year.

CALLFOR ARTISTS:

This year, the PITTSBURGH Society of Artists would like to encourage our members to think outside of the box. Our WORKING WITH PAPER exhibition  challenges you to show how paper is used in your art. Works can be on paper, to include graphite, pen, ink, charcoal, pastels, printmaking, paper craft (3D or 2D), collage, colored pencil, gouache, watercolor, word art (and book art), handmade paper, prepared paper with mediums. Mixed media on and with paper and collages using digital images.

Paper has been around from as early as the Second century BCE in China. Early paper was made from “rags”, hemp, linen, cotton. Today, however, most paper is made from a wood fiber to produce the pulp either chemically or mechanically. The history of the modern world was dependent on paper to convey ideas, treatises and opportunities and to further the progress of civilization.

PITTSBURGH Society of Artists looks to our artists to pay homage to paper in its many forms and uses with an exhibition solely dedicated to the use of paper in art.

OUR JUROR: NICOLE CAPOZZI

Nicole Capozzi was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and studied at Carlow College (now Carlow University) receiving her BA in 1998. Shortly upon graduating Capozzi began BoxHeart Expressions by organizing women’s work exhibitions in venues around Pittsburgh. In 2001, BoxHeart found its own physical location at 4523 Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield. Since then, Capozzi has curated, coordinated, and hosted over 500 exhibitions for regional, national, and international artists providing an outlet for conceptually engaged and aesthetically resolved exhibitions that both reflect contemporary art issues and are relevant to the community.

DOWNLOAD PROSPECTUS                                      REGISTER FOR EXHIBITION

Photographing and formatting your art can be overwhelming.

The PITTSBURGH Society of Artists is here to help! In preparation for the upcoming WORKING WITH PAPER exhibit at BoxHeart Gallery, PSA will be hosting a photo session where you can have 1-2 of your pieces photographed by PSA member Alexis Dillon. These professional photographs will emailed back to you or uploaded onto a USB drive (memory stick) ready for digital submission.

Call for Sculptors:

Pittsburgh Botanic Garden in Oakdale, PA is now accepting proposals for a group exhibition at the Garden this year. Tentative exhibition dates for the group exhibition are June 15 through October 29, 2023.

Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is excited to offer visitors an exhibition of outdoor sculptures in our 65 acres of developed gardens and woodlands during the summer and early fall this year. The tentative title of “Unearthed: An EcoArt Exhibition” is meant to embody the main focus of the exhibition: artwork should be made from found objects and/or repurposed materials headed for the landfill and/or natural materials (twigs, wood, stones).

This exhibition is FREE to artists (no fee for submitting a proposal and no fee for exhibiting)

Artist proposals should use the following criteria as general guidelines:

• The art should be made from found objects and/or repurposed materials headed for the landfill and/or natural materials (twigs, wood, stones). Artwork should come from one, two or all three of these sources.

• Artwork can be previously completed/exhibited or new. If existing, the artwork should be in good enough condition to hold up in outdoor weather conditions for the duration of the exhibition. Artwork can, however, change over the length of the exhibit as long as decomposition does not create an unsafe or unhealthy condition.

• Artwork can be for sale. Artists receive 80% of the sale price with 20% to Pittsburgh Botanic Garden (for processing and administrative overhead). Any artwork in the exhibition should be on display the entire length of the exhibition.

• To make a ‘statement’ in the great outdoors, artwork should be of a size no less than 48-inches tall or wide, with no limit on maximum size.

• Priority will be given to artists from underrepresented communities. The Garden celebrates artists from diverse backgrounds, self-expression and identities, and strives to demonstrate Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Access (IDEA) as a core value.

• Priority will also be given to ‘local’ artists (Western Pennsylvania and surrounding environs). Any natural materials used in the artwork should be representative of Western PA (no cactus or tropical plant parts, for example).

Concurrent to this exhibition, the Garden will also be exhibiting artwork by Michelle Stitzlein primarily in the Welcome Center Gallery space. One large grouping of her figures will be incorporated in the Garden’s outdoor space as well.

To Apply:

Deadlines: Proposals will be reviewed after the February 15, 2023 deadline. Proposals will be reviewed within 2 weeks with final invitations sent by March 1, 2023.

Exhibition Proposal Requirements:

• Artist name, phone number, street address, city/state, email

• Artist statement (300 word min; 500 word max)

• Artist bio

• Exhibition proposal (300 word min; 500 word maxi)

• Images (emailed to Exhibits Director, Mark Miller:

atmmiller@pittsburghbotanicgarden.org

• For your proposal: 5-7 images (of work you plan to exhibit or images of past bodies of work if you intend to create new work) with image list (including artist, title, year of creation, medium and/or source, size, and price).

Exhibition proposals will be reviewed by a panel of Pittsburgh Botanic Garden staff, Board members and local artist advisors. Selected proposals will be notified by email and provided with an exhibition contract.
